South Carolina “Bird Dog”

This recipe is inspired by the “Bird dog”, a dish at one of our favorite local hole-in-the-wall restaurants near Greenville, SC called Mac Smith’s. This is one of those hyper-local regional favorites, to the point that Google doesn’t really know what a “Bird dog” is! Check out our blog associated with this recipe and how to make the homemade version of this classic South Carolina special, wherever you are!

Chicken & Sweet Potato Hash

One of favorite things to use when we go camping is our cast iron skillet! This five ingredient Chicken & Sweet Potato Hash was delish and so easy to make. This recipe takes a long time with marinading time, however, could be sped up if making or baking at home.

Pickled Cabbage & Onions

This was our first try at pickling anything and it turned out amazing (not to #humblebrag or anything). Had a head of cabbage and a a few types of onions to use, which added both flavor, crunch, & color to these beauties. The spices in this recipe could be subbed out or changed based on availability or preference – get creative with your pickled veggies!

Colombian Carnitas Marinade

Y’all know I love anything that can start as a base for tacos, & this Colombian carnitas marinade recipe is no exception! My goal was to adapt a marinade to include the Naranjilla (Colombian citrus) puree sent from our friends at Wislla Distribution. Check out more information about the project that inspired this and other recipes from our blog here later on!

Recipe Notes:

  • You can very easily sub out the naranjilla puree. If you can’t find this at your local Mexican grocery store, no worries! You can easily substitute this with 1/2 of a pureed lemon/orange/grapefruit as well. Generally, any citrus would do!
  • This recipe is super easy to adapt to be sweeter or spicier though.
  • It’s a great marinade to use for a quick recipe or if you’re trying to have the meat marinate in the fridge longer (24-48 hours).
  • *To make sure the marinade really seeps into your meat of choice, you can poke holes into the meat before adding it to the bag with the marinade.

Honey Dijon Citrus Wings

I wanted to re-create a recipe for some Honey Citrus wings we had at a bar recently that we absolutely loved, using some of our new fruit purees! For this recipe, we used the Naranjilla (a Colombian citrus) from our friends at Wislla Distribution, however, you could sub that out with orange juice, lime juice, or another citrus fruit juice of choice.

Tropical Tanager Tea

This Tropical Tanager Tea recipe is named after the Multi-colored Tanager, a species of bird native to the mountains of Colombia. I thought it was a great muse to name this tea after! This recipe is an homage to one of Colombia’s prettiest species, as the ingredients I chose to add to this tropical tea recipe match the bird’s vibrant colors.

Recipe Notes:

  • For this recipe, we used one of the amazing fruit purees from our friends at Wislla Distribution, the Naranjilla (a Colombian citrus) fruit. However, you could sub that out with orange juice, mango nectar, or another mixed fruit juice of choice!
  • This recipe goes really well with a dash of rum too (for my adult 21+ drinkers)!
  • It lasts up to one week in the fridge in a covered pitcher.

Microwave Lemon Curd

This is a great shortcut recipe to make lemon curd – in the microwave! A super quick way to make an amazing dish in five minutes! Now, I hear you, I know what you’re thinking – this looks nothing like lemon curd. That’s because instead of lemon juice, we used one of the amazing fruit purees from our friends at Wislla Distribution. So what’s pictured above is Naranjilla (a Colombian citrus) fruit curd! Check out more information about the project that inspired this and other recipes from our blog here later on.

Recipe Notes:

  • The asterisks here correspond to places in the instructions below.
  • *During step 2, you could sub the lemon juice and zest out for a fruit puree if you had that on hand, which is how we made the Naranjilla curd, pictured above.
  • **It helps to write tick marks or note how many times the bowl has been in the microwave to help you keep track.
