Weekend Foodie Warriors- Take 14!
Hello hello, again, Foodie Friends π Hope you had a fantastic weekend! In this edition of Foodie Adventures, I’ll be taking you on a tour of National Donut Day, our Asheville, NC Air B&B retreat, Josh’s Farmers Market, and Cookies with Mom!
National Donut Day
Greenville, SC
Happy National Donut Day!
June 7th, the first Friday in June, is when National Donut Day fell on this year.
Originally celebrated after the Salvation Army event in Chicago in 1938 for those members who gave donuts to soldiers in World War I, this holiday remembers those who volunteered their time (and food) to those who fought to keep us and our country safe.
So I grabbed Max and headed out to find all the free donuts we could get our paws on! π©
Click through the instagram post to see more! Picture #1: One of my favorite pairs of crazy socks my little sister got me for Christmas – sloths sitting on donuts like inner tubes! Picture #2: Dunkin’ decked out for the holiday! You had to buy a drink to get a free donut, I got a Cold Brew with almond milk, hazelnut and mocha swirls, and a donut that matched my socks. Picture #3: The line at Krispy Kreme, which was a lot longer as they were just giving free donuts to anyone who walked in! Picture #4: Luckily, they gave out mini donut holes to all us patient people waiting in line. Picture #5: See below.
Our coffee & donut haul- One Cold Brew Hazelnut Mocha, One Strawberry sprinkle from Dunkin’, and a raspberry filled from Krispy Kreme
It was my friend Jenna’s birthday this weekend and she invited us and a bunch of friends to come celebrate with a relaxing mountain getaway in Asheville, NC.
This gorgeous little four bedroom barn house was nestled between the mountain and a little creek, with gardens and great outdoor spaces to boot!
The outdoor spaces included a fire pit, hot tub, stone steps down to the river, a little vegetable garden, and chickens!
This little hay bale had a pair of Steer horns on it and there was a rope instead if you wanted to pretend to be a cattle rancher. Wouldn’t you know I hooked that right horn after about 10 tries?? Of course we didn’t get a shot of that because it was pouring buckets at the time.
More pictures of us exploring the outside areas are in the slideshow above! Below is another slideshow of the inside of the house, courtesy of our weekend photographer, Zach (My phone did not want to cooperate this weekend). It was super cozy (literally, see multiple pictures of me in blanket burrito fashion), and the little touches they added to the kitchen were definitely instagram worthy!
Full Breakfast made by friends on Saturday – scrambled eggs, bacon, fresh fruit & pancakes π₯ π₯
Would definitely recommend checking this place out if you want a cell-phone free, cozy getaway, complete with all the creature comforts of home and adventure just out your backyard! We were only about 20 mins from Asheville and about 10-15 from Hendersonville, the next town over (pics on that below too!).
Went home to visit family on Sunday and this was our activity!
My uncle had come to visit and my mom wanted to get some fresh fruits and veggies for our meals on Sunday, so we headed to our favorite local market.
From wild caught shrimp to spaghetti squash, blackberries to kale, this farm-stand has almost everything!
My absolute favorite Pimento Cheese brand can be found here (middle shelf on the right)- Queen Charlotte’s Pimento Cheese Royaleβ’ – this is the brand that originally got me hooked on this Southern delight!
Their tomato selection was massive too, loved the color similarities between these and mom’s shirt!
They also have a wide variety of homemade jams, jellies, relishes, and baked goods from around the area. Reminds me of a farm stand in Maryland we used to go to when I was growing up.
My favorite new item we brought home was an Aloha Pepper, a stripey version of a bell pepper that will add some great flavor and color to some breakfast burritos I’m making this week! Stay tuned for those.
Cookies with Mom
Lake Norman, NC
We also found this wicked cool chocolate chips at the grocery store on our way back that had Bailey’s Liquor infused in them! No alcohol present, no worries ya’ll, these are work safe. It may smell like you indulged in a boozy mudslide at lunch, but your secret will be safe with us (and the cookies) πͺ
We pretty much followed the cookie recipe on the back of the bag with the usual culprits, eggs, flour, sugar (both kinds), vanilla, salt, baking powder and baking soda.
This recipe made about 3-4 dozen cookies using our bigger cookie scoop, you could get more using a teaspoon though!
These are what the last of the batch and the bag look like in case you’re interested in trying them out for yourself, they were really yummy!
